HungerStation has introduced an innovative AI-powered “Shaded Route” system to shield its riders from the harsh desert heat. Designed to tackle temperatures reaching up to 50°C, the system prioritizes shaded delivery paths, ensuring rider safety and comfort without compromising delivery speed.

The initiative, developed in partnership with VML Riyadh, builds on HungerStation’s previous campaign, “Tip with Time,” which encouraged customers to prioritize rider well-being.

How the Shaded Route System Works

Leveraging advanced AI, the system monitors the sun’s real-time position, Riyadh’s urban layout, and cloud coverage to map shaded paths under buildings, trees, bridges, and tunnels. By directing riders to cooler routes—up to 10-15°C lower than standard paths—the technology minimizes heat exposure. These routes are optimized to be within 10% of the fastest delivery times, maintaining HungerStation’s promise of efficiency.

The system continuously evolves by analyzing data from riders’ phone LiDAR sensors, refining its recommendations for improved effectiveness.

A Commitment to Rider Welfare

“Our riders are the backbone of our operations,” said Ahmad Chatila, Director of Brand and Communication at HungerStation. “The ‘Shaded Route’ reflects our commitment to innovation that prioritizes their well-being, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.”

Firas Ghannam, Executive Creative Director at VML Riyadh, added, “This initiative proves how technology can be a force for good, addressing real-world challenges while maintaining operational excellence.”

Tangible Results and Industry Impact

Since its pilot phase last summer, the initiative has delivered impressive results:

  • Rider applications increased by 8%.
  • Retention rates improved by 20%.
  • Rider satisfaction rose by 15%.
  • Midday deliveries (12 PM–4 PM) surged by 20%.

The system has sparked industry discussions about rider welfare and the role of technology in addressing extreme climates, positioning HungerStation as a leader in balancing operational efficiency with employee well-being.

By prioritizing the health and safety of its workforce, HungerStation is setting a new standard for the delivery industry in extreme environments, proving that innovation and empathy can go hand in hand.
